October Harvest

This Week at the Market — October 11, 2015

So far this October has been a nice reminder of how sweet autumn can be. Autumn seems a gentler season than the two that bookend it, and with leaves just starting to turn, let’s hope the gentleness lingers. The October harvest is one of autumn’s pleasures, and you’ll find it at this week’s Brighton Farmers’ Market.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce will have certified organic carrots, golden beets, sweet potatoes, napa cabbage, butternut and spaghetti squash, pie pumpkins, green cabbage, leeks, spinach, arugula, red peppers, red potatoes, green kale, zucchini, garlic, red beets, radishes, and turnips. Shady Lane Farm is brining sweet potatoes, leeks, edamame, Jerusalem artichokes, sweet peppers, cooking onions, beets, kohlrabi, Swiss chard, butternut and spaghetti squash, pie pumpkins, the last of the zucchini and watermelon, mini pumpkins for decorating, fresh-cut chives and parsley, and colorful flower bouquets.

Dearhaven Farm is bringing certified organic fennel, spinach, baby greens, sweet and crunchy Empire apples, lettuce, scallions, leeks, potatoes, beets, cabbage, sweet and hot peppers, garlic, kohlrabi, onions, carrots, parsley, arugula, and thyme. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring pork loin roasts, pasture-raised, certified organic, and suggests this recipeGrowing Family Farm will have grape tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, beel peppers, daikon radishes, squash (delicata, spaghetti, and butternut), celery, napa cabbage, beets, French filet beans, fresh carrots, cardoons, pastured free-range eggs, and Singer Farm Naturals tart cherry juice.

Karen Bischoping says “Believe it or not we will have peaches!” — an October-ripening variety called Victoria; K&S Bischoping will also have lots of apples including Honey Crisp, Crispin, Empire, Cortland, Gala, Daybreak Fuji, Macoun, and heirlooms including Roxbury Russet. Bolton Farms will have lettuce bouquets, spring mix, bibb lettuce, arugula, kale, mustard greens, basil, parsley, cilantro, squash, and sweet corn.

R&M Bischoping will have radishes, tomatillos, hot peppers,  kale, Swiss chard, green beans, sunflower bouquets, pie and carving pumpkins, and acorn squash. Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic lettuce, kale, garlic, beets, leeks, onions, shallots, Hakurei turnips, Red Cross turnips, watermelon radishes, tomatillos, sweet peppers, hot peppers, potatoes, and five varieties of apples. Smugtown Mushrooms will have fresh cultivated oyster, shiitake, and lions mane mushrooms, foraged hen of the woods (maitake) mushrooms, dried reishi tea, mushroom tinctures, kombucha starter kits, mushroom grow kits, and plug spawn.

Chicory Blue Gardens will have zinnias and statice in warm fall colors and sunflowers, plus a nice selection of dried flowers. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will have three grades of maple syrup, maple cream spread, granulated maple sugar, maple garlic pepper rub, and maple mustard. Seaway Trail Honey is brining robust fall honey, raw and fresh and harvested Wednesday, plus honeycomb; Pat will also offer red and blush crabapples and heirloom quince (great for making jellies), all pollinated by Seaway Trail honeybees.

Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, shepherds, pulled pork, and panang pot pies. Nordic Farm is bringing jams and jellies, including caramel apple jam, many pickles, and granola. Pasta Classics will have pumpkin ravioli and fresh pasta including spinach basil and garlic and pepper. Lavender Moon is bringing herbal necessities and fall favorites such as flavored fair trade hot cocoa mixes and herbal chili seasoning. Brian’s Kitchen will have regular, gluten-free, sugar-free, and vegan cookies.

JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing beef chuck roast sandwiches, baked macaroni and cheese, pumpkin royale crunch cake, peanut butter balls, pecan apple crumb cake, carrot cake, apple crumb pie, peach cobbler, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, lemon dream cake, double layer beyond chocolate cake with chocolate custard, butter croissants, and oreo cheesecake brownies. Biscotti for Everybotti is bringing seasonal pumpkin (also in vegan and gluten-free) and maple biscotti. Rise and Shine Bread will have English muffin bread, asiago ciabatta, focaccia, honey wheat, rye, pumpernickel, raisin, sweet breads, and brownies. Le Petit Poutine will offer a special Halloween activity for kids!

EBT/SNAP Bonus Program/Fresh Connect Checks

We’re pleased to offer our Market Bonus Program for EBT/SNAP customers. Purchase at least $10 in tokens with an EBT card, and receive $5 in bonus tokens to be used at the market to purchase EBT eligible foods. We now are also offering Fresh Connect Checks to SNAP customers; this state-funded program allows us to give a $2 Fresh Connect Check with each $5 in tokens purchased with an EBT/SNAP card, which can be used to purchase any SNAP-eligible foods at the market.

Winter Market

The summer Brighton Farmers’ Market runs through October 25. The winter Market opens November 1 and meets every Sunday, 1 to 4 pm, through May 17 in Brighton’s Brookside Center, 220 Idlewood Rd.
