This Week at the Market — August 2

Slow down, please, Summer. It seems like you just arrived, and we’re enjoying your company. We’re also reveling in the riches of the summer harvest from our local farms, on glorious display this week at Brighton Farmers’ Market. Sweet summer fruits are abundant; Lagoner Farms will have blueberries, Rising Star peaches, apricots, red and yellow plums, raspberries, and tart cherries, plus lots of green and yellow beans, great for canning or freezing. Clearview Farm is bringing certified organic young green and golden zucchini and yellow summer squash, bread zucchini, Genovese and lemon basil, scallions, cucumbers, a few ground cherry samples, certified organic and organically-fed free-range eggs, fresh gigante d’Italia parsley, thyme, sage, oregano, lemon mint, and valerian root, which Kurt recommends for insomniacs.

Bolton Farms will have lettuces, kale, chard, basil, and more from the hydroponic greenhouses, and heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, and yellow and green beans from soil. Shady Lane Farm is bringing gold and red potatoes, rainbow chard, kohlrabi, zucchini and custard squash, lettuce, sweet onions, fresh-cut parsley, mint, cinnamon basil, and colorful summer flowers.

Lighthouse Gardens will have certified organic cherry tomatoes, cocktail tomatoes, lettuce bouquets, sweet peppers, baby Swiss chard, baby kale, scallions, bunched basil, garlic scapes, garlic, cut sunflowers, flower bouquets, certified organic herb and vegetable transplants, flowering annuals, summer blooming perennials, lettuce bowls, veggie bowls, and herb planters. New this week from Fisher Hill Farm are cantaloupes; Phil will also have sweet corn, beets, garlic, scapes, onions, zucchini, cucumbers, summer squash, new red potatoes, carrots, radish, beans, lettuce, frozen chicken, chicken and duck eggs, and Red Jacket juices.

Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic, pasture-raised fresh hams and free-range chicken and duck eggs. Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic carrots, green beans, new red potatoes, sweet onions, red leaf lettuce, slicing and pickling cucumbers, zucchini, fresh garlic, red beets, spinach, garlic scapes, red radishes, green kale, Hakurei turnips, arugula, sauerkraut, and garlic powder.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing soy-free eggs from free-ranging hens, soy-free pork from pastured pigs, and 100% grass-fed and finished beef, all certified organic and non-GMO from healthy animals humanely raised outdoors. Growing Family Farms will have heirloom tomatoes; grape tomatoes; sweet peppers; Japanese, English, and Indian cucumbers; bicolor eggplant; scarlet turnips; white icicle radishes, Italian dandelion; rainbow chard, kale; fresh onions; garlic scapes; and tart cherry juice from Singer Naturals.

R&M Bischoping will have cucumbers, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, kale, Swiss chard, baby zucchini, and sunflower and zinnia bouquets. Chicory Blue Gardens will have lots of pretty bouquets with a mixture of zinnias, ornamental grasses, dahlias, sunflowers, and lots of other blooms. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing pure maple syrup in several new “fancy glass” bottles — wonderful gifts.

Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, beets, fennel, kale, chard, salad mix, arugula, eggplant, peppers, summer squash, peaches, and hakurei turnips. Dearhaven Farm will have certified organic fennel, large heads of romaine and oakleaf lettuce, assorted colorful fresh snap and romano beans, carrots, beets, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, sweet onions, large hardneck garlic, cherry and salad tomatoes and a few heirlooms, snap peas, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, and parsley.

Tripleberry Farm will have pesticide-free blueberries and giant blackberries, plus fresh batches of goat milk soaps, including new scents and Clean Dog for repelling fleas and mosquitos, and Jewel Weed for poison ivy. Nordic Farm is bringing fresh onion jelly, made with Dearhaven Farm’s Walla Walla sweet onions and Lighthouse Gardens’ red and orange sweet peppers, Queen Anne’s Lace jelly, and four kinds of British-style scones.

Seaway Trail Honey is bringing raw local honey made from wildflower nectar and harvested Wednesday; visit the NY Bee Wellness display that features live young honey bees. Iroquois White Corn Project is offering its gluten-free, non-GMO corn products along with tasty corn cookies and corn bread. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, shepherds and panang pot pies, plus quiche and tarts.

Small World Food is bringing strawberry pastry knots, pain au levain, country multigrain, and sourdough rye bread, grape juice, Napa kimchi, daikon kimchi, kvass, sauerkraut, and black bean miso. JonJohn’s Bakery will have raspberry infused lemonade, roast pork sandwiches, baked macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler, apricot tarts, apricot crumb coffee cake, carrot cake, Oreo cheesecake brownies, blueberry tarts, sweet potato tarts, peanut butter balls, carrot muffins, zucchini muffins, raspberry blueberry coffee cake, lemon blueberry cake, chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cranberry cookies, double-decker raspberry cake, and double-decker German chocolate cake.

Biscotti for Everybotti is introducing gluten-free anise biscotti, made with corn from Iroquois White Corn Project. Eat Me Ice Cream is bringing cassis and cream cheese swirl ice cream and coconut-cassis and chocolate ice cream in sammies and pints. Flour City Pasta is featuring basil tangerine orzo. Breathe Yoga will have cold pressed juice, gluten-free and vegetarian wraps, quinoa salad, market salad, gluten-free baked goods, and cardamom cookies.

Rise and Shine Bread is bringing English muffin bread, asiago ciabatta, focaccia, honey wheat, wheat, pumpernickel, rye, raisin, sweet breads, and brownies. Community Composting/Impact Earth will is offering a special on 50 lb. bags of organic compost; ask about their special on residential composting service, and about volunteer opportunities at the fall Zero Waste Initiative.

EBT/SNAP Bonus Program

Winton Road Closing

Beginning July 13, Winton Road will be closed between Elmwood (12 Corners) and Westfall Rd for replacement of a culvert. However, S. Winton Road will be open to local traffic heading north from Westfall Road, which will allow access to the Brighton Farmers’ Market. The road will be closed for 30 days; the market will be open every Sunday during that period. Just follow detour signs to reach the Westfall Road entrance.
