2009 BRIGHTON FARMERS’ MARKET

Warm, sunny days have arrived, and with them comes Opening Day of the 2009 Brighton Farmers’ Market season.   Thanks to all who made the market’s first year a success; join us for a bigger and better market this year, starting May 31.  Our Opening Day celebration begins at 10 am, when Supervisor Frankel will preside over the annual cutting of the vine.  The Brighton Farmers’ Market house band, Clamor, will start out the season for us with their unique musical offerings.  Clamor may be the only folk trio in Rochester that includes a trombone, which is a good indication that their music doesn’t fit easily into any of the usual categories.

What’s fresh now

The earliest crops of spring are ready and oh, so delicious.  Farmers are harvesting green garlic, the mild, tender young garlic plant; you can eat the whole plant.  It’s wonderful chopped and added to many dishes.  Try some sauteed in a little butter, then scramble some eggs in the pan and add a little grated cheese.  Soon scapes will be arriving at the market, the tender stalk of the garlic plant.  Farmers will also be bringing greens, including kale and salad greens, herbs, spinach, radishes, and rhubarb.  Strawberries should be ready to harvest by mid-June.  The market is also a great place to get plants for your yard and garden, including vegetable plants, herbs, annuals and perennials.  The market’s plant growers use no synthetic chemicals — they may be the only plant growers in the area who grow their plants so sustainably.
