May at the Market

This Week at the MarketMay 3

We made it to May! There must be a corollary — the tougher the winter, the happier we all are at May’s sparkling arrival. Farms are also welcoming May, and farmers are harvesting the first early crops that inaugurate the new season. Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic kale, Hakurei turnips, komatsuna, sorrel, eggs, and spinach.  Clearview Farm will have ramps (hurry, it’s a very short season!), green onions, red sunchokes, gold and purple top turnips, certified organic free-range eggs, dried herbs, and dried beans — cannellini, red Merlot, and black.

Fisher Hill Farm is bringing spring mix, lettuce, leeks, fresh chicken (whole, half, and livers), both conventional and organically-fed, potatoes, beets, cabbage, rutabaga, celeriac, onions, carrots, micro greens, eggs, and Red Jacket juices. Lakestone Family Farm will have certified organic baby kale, eggs, whole chickens, and chicken legs.

Smugtown Mushrooms is bringing oyster mushrooms, grow kits, plug spawn, kombucha kits, and ramps. Growing Family Farms will have spinach, arugula, Asian greens, pea shoots, potted basil and cilantro, free range eggs, dried shiitakes, Small World ferments and granola, and Singer Naturals tart cherry juice.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic baby spinach, kale, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, beets, green cabbage, garlic powder, sauerkraut, and frozen tomatoes. Shannon Brook Farm is offering a special on pork chops — 10% off two packages of organic, pasture-raised loin, sirloin, or rib chops.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing eggs from free-ranging hens, 100% grass fed beef, pasture-raised pork, and honey; all animals are raised outdoors humanely on certified organic no-soy feed and pastures. Rise and Shine Bread is bringing English muffin bread, asiago ciabatta, rosemary focaccia, rye, pumpernickel, raisin, wheat, muffins, and sweet bread.

Newbury Park Pastries will have Philly cheesesteak, chicken, veggie, pulled pork, and panang pot pies, plus roasted red pepper, fresh mozzarella and ramp oil quiche. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing a fresh batch of soft maple sugar shapes, maple garlic pepper rub for grilling meats or veggies, and dark maple syrup.

Brian’s Kitchen is featuring an improved gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. Tripleberry Farm is bringing freshly-made pesticide-free berry jams and moisturizing goat milk soaps, including lilac scented soap, a soap for oily skin and acne, and jewel weed soap to combat poison ivy. Nordic Farm will have Mother’s Day gift boxes, new jams and jellies, pickles, four kinds of granola, paleo and gluten-free baked goods, and spiced pecans.
