Please join us for the opening of the Brighton Farmers’ Market’s fourth great season! Supervisor Sandra Frankel, joined by special guest Assemblyman Joe Morelle, will launch the season with the traditional cutting of the vine at 10 am. And what would Opening Day be without music and irreverence from the local trio Clamor (thanks Rick McRae, Steve Piper, and Bruce Diamond)?
Farmers have had a tough spring; the cold, wet weather has delayed planting, and some crops are behind schedule. This will be a good year to show our support for farmers’ hard work to bring us local food, sustainably-grown. There will be a great assortment of plants for your garden, including now Certified Organic Lighthouse Gardens’ wide variety of herbs, vegetable plants, and Todd’s Living Earth Organic Potting Soil. Raindance Harvest once again will offer vegetable plants for the garden, including Brian’s amazing variety of heirloom tomato plants. Although many crops are delayed, there will be some beets, lettuce, green onions, asparagus, rhubarb, and kale.
The market welcomes new vendors this year, including the following who will join us for Opening Day: Brown Hound Bistro in Naples is offering their delicious soups. Also from Naples, Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing maple syrup and other maple products. Two goat farms will join us — First Light Farm in East Bethany, and Blue Moon Bend Farm in Marion — offering goats’ milk and cows’ milk cheeses (and maybe a baby goat or two for the kids to pet?). JonJohn’s Bakery, a long-time favorite at the Public Market, is bringing a variety of sweet treats. Keith Myers of Flour City Bread will return will his artisanal breads and pastries.
The Good Grub Club returns for kids, and Color Brighton Green will again offer information on recycling and energy conservation. For information on the items they will be collecting at the market for recycling this year, please see http://www.colorbrightongreen.org/site/index.php?page=brighton-farmer-market.
The Brighton Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday through October 30, 9 am to 1 pm, in the Brighton High School parking lot, 1150 Winton Road South. The market is sponsored by the Town of Brighton. For more information, visit www.brightonfarmersmarket.org, or “Like” the market on Facebook.
