These are salad days at the Brighton Farmers’ Market.   Farmers’ tables will be piled high this Sunday, June 26, with an abundance of lettuces and greens in a rainbow of colors.  Greens become harder to grow later in the summer and tend to bolt, but they seem to have thrived in the crazy weather of this spring and early summer, and they’re tender and delicious right now, a revelation if you haven’t tried freshly-picked greens before.  To round out your salad, add some crunchy carrots and radishes, including purple, daikon, or watermelon radishes from Freshwise Farms.  In addition to salad greens, there will be sturdier varieties such as chard and kale, either of which is delicious sauteed in olive oil with some minced onion and garlic scapes and finished with a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Clearview Farm is harvesting  young rainbow chard, “wrinkled crinkled crumpled cress”, beets, turnips, garlic scapes, and dill, and will bring certified organic eggs.  Another certified organic farm, Honeyhill Farm, is bringing carrots and a variety of other vegetables, plus fresh chickens, the most flavorful anywhere.   Lagoner Farm reports the first raspberries and sweet cherries of the season will be available in limited quantities; shop early.  Strawberries are winding down, but there should be enough for one last shortcake of the season; check with Phil and Sandi of Fisher Hill Farm.  Brown Hound Bistro will offer vegetarian, gluten-free Snap Pea Soup made from Fisher Hill Farm’s peas.  Espresso Chocolate Chip Biscotti will be available from Biscotti for Everybotti.  And if you’d like to see some wide eyes at the breakfast table, pick up some water buffalo milk from Fingerlakes Farms.

Kids and non-kids will want to check out our special event this week; it’s Public Safety Day at the market.  Personnel from the Brighton Fire Department, Brighton Police Department, and Brighton Volunteer Ambulance will join the market with their equipment, including fire trucks.  They’ll offer information on services they provide plus tips on how to keep our families safe.   Thanks to those public servants who help keep our community safe.

Grant Cos and Babak Elahi return to the music tent this week.  Kids can visit the Good Grub Club for a veggie scavenger hunt at the market.  We also welcome Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension, who will offer gardening tips and answer questions.

The Brighton Farmers’ Market is held Sundays from 9 am to 1 pm in the Brighton  High School parking lot, 1150 Winton Road S.  The market is sponsored by the Town of Brighton.  For more information, visit www.brightonfarmersmarket.org, or “like” the market on Facebook.
