Forget Black Friday; we’ve got Green Sunday at the Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market. You’d be amazed at the fresh, wonderful produce local farmers are still bringing to market. Put what’s left of the turkey in a pot and make a wonderful soup with local onions, leeks, potatoes, turnips, and carrots, and add some chopped chard and fresh herbs to brighten the flavor and color. There are lots of fresh salad greens — several kinds of lettuce, tat soi, arugula, and salad mixes. Farmers still have peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, kale, winter squash, cabbage, pumpkins, and lots more. Apples are plentiful, many varieties for cooking, eating, and storing. Holiday gift ideas from the market include beeswax candles and ornaments; herbal soaps, lotions, and other products; alpaca yarn and textiles; jams and jellies; honey; fudge; fine chocolates; baking mixes; biscotti; and hot sauces. This week we’ll have music from Bob White and Jeff Love.
The Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market is held Sunday afternoons, 1-4 pm, through December 19. The market is a collaboration between the Brighton and South Wedge Farmers’ Markets, jointly sponsored by the Town of Brighton and the South Wedge Planning Committee. It’s held at the Brookside Community Center, 220 Idlewood Road, Rochester, with a second entrance off S. Winton south of the Westfall/S.Winton intersection.
