For many, these last days of summer feel bittersweet, but at the Brighton Farmers’ Market this Sunday (8/28), it’ll be all sweet, no bitter. Weather extremes have made this a very challenging year for our farmers, but they’ve persevered, and now they’re harvesting a late summer bounty. Robin Bischoping reports that she will be bringing some heat to market — the first habanero peppers, plus ancho, cayenne, jalapeno, and anaheims, as well as tomatillos, baby zucchini, and more. Karen and Stan Bischoping are harvesting Paulared, Summer Rambo, and Chenango Strawberry apples, plus Red Haven and huge Canadian harmony peaches, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Shady Lane Farm will bring the first of the farm’s four edamame varieties — Beer Friend soybeans (best variety name of the week, with Summer Rambo a close second). Organic Matters Farm will have large and small heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, parsley, beans, small eggplant, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and spaghetti squash. Honeyhill Farm also has lots of cherry and heirloom tomatoes, plus Red Gold and Purple Haze potatoes, extra-sweet onions, garlic, golden and red beets, and large fresh chickens.
Chicory Blue Gardens will have lovely bouquets, including richly-colored China asters, broom corn, and deep red amaranth. Snow Daze is featuring all-local flavors this week, including Plum Raspberry and Peach Blueberry. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing back its popular Coconut Cake and Pumpkin Cookies, and Biscotti for Everybotti will have Cinnamon and Cinnamon Raisin Biscotti. Tripleberry Farm will have brownies and muffins featuring Kim’s own pesticide-free berries.
Music will be provided by Erik Reinhart this week. Community members involved with the Buckland Creek Restoration project will join us to offer information about their work, and it’s Yummy Plum Day at the Good Grub Club Tent.
