Friday’s rain offered welcome relief to parched fields; this has been a challenging year for our farmers. Thanks to all who support these hard-working farmers, and to the farmers themselves for their efforts to provide us with delicious fresh food and a more sustainable local food system.
At the Brighton Farmers’ Market this week (7/31) the farmers will be offering a bounty of mid-summer fruits and vegetables. Fisher Hill Farm is harvesting cantaloupe and lots of sweet corn, and K & S Bischoping will bring Candor peaches, blueberries, raspberries, apricots, and freshly-dug potatoes. At Ann’s Purple Produce tent you’ll find purple radishes, small plurplette onions, scallions, colorful chard, beets, red lettuce, bouquets and cut herbs, and purple annuals and perennials to give a summer lift to your garden. Lagoner Farms is bringing apricots, red and yellow plums, peaches, lots of blueberries, nectarines, yellow tomatoes, green and yellow beans, red and yellow beets, and radishes. Clearview Farm will have Orient Express and classic eggplant, Roma and regular green beans, escarole, spinach, and young rainbow chard, plus eggs. R & M Bischoping will bring gladiolus, jalapeno and Anaheim hot peppers, lovely mixed bouquets and sunflowers, tomatillos, baby zucchini, and pickling and slicing cucumbers.
Bloomfield Honey just harvested a new crop of honey from their bees at an organic farm in Victor and will be bringing it to market. Trish of Brown Hound Bistro will bring tasty gazpacho, the perfect mid-summer chilled soup. Biscotti for Everybotti will have bags of biscotti crumbs to mix into ice cream or yogurt, or to use as a pie crust. Snow Daze will offer a new flavor of snow cone, Peach Currant, made with Karen Bischoping’s delicious fruit.
The Brighton Food Cupboard will again join us to collect donations, and Color Brighton Green will offer energy-saving information. Kimber Gorall of Veg Mondays will provide information about her organization. Students of Abigail McHugh of Hochstein Music School will provide music, and it will be Blueberry Day at the Good Grub Club.
The Brighton Farmers’ Market is held Sundays 9 am to 1 pm in the Brighton High School parking lot, 1150 Winton Road South. The market is sponsored by the Town of Brighton. Please visit www.brightonfarmersmarket or the market’s facebook page.
